If you are a resident of the great state of New Jersey, or simply passing through, Educate yourself: You are currently in the state that offers the most commonly available palette of sports betting options.
Sure Nevada and Mississippi and may have more land-based books, but just in New Jersey can bettors roll the dice onto a 3-leg parlay without ever once having to visit the casino. As well as your placing that bet, be sure to thank the U.S. Supreme Court, which in May 2018 lifted the national ban on sports betting, otherwise called PASPA.
We also should extend thanks to New Jersey lawmakers for swiftly passing legislation that set the tax rate on online sports wagering low, and also for not placing unnecessary restrictions on operators that would interfere with the growth of the industry. Ultimately, NJ sports betting would have never went live quickly if it weren’t for the nation’s regulatory body, the NJ Division of Gaming Enforcement, which has provided supervision for the state’s internet casino and gambling industries since 2013, enabling regulators to make the transition to online gambling betting that much easier.
Whether new to sports wagering or some seasoned sharp, we’ve got you covered with a in depth look at the legal NJ online sports gambling market, covering online and cellular sportsbooks that lawfully take stakes, what you’ll have to do to begin, and a return to how legal sports betting in the Garden State turned into a reality. Not an internet guy or gal? We’ll touch on the state’s physical sportsbooks as well.

Getting started at NJ online sportsbooks
Based on whether you’re already involved with the NJ online casino or poker arena, it will take anywhere from zero seconds to no longer than 5 minutes to place your first bet. That is, pending you meet a couple of eligibility requirements:
Under 21? Hold all stakes It doesn’t matter how mature you might be, if you are under the age of 21, then you can’t enroll an internet sports betting account in New Jersey. This is precisely the identical age requirement employed by Atlantic City casinos and the state’s online gaming and poker sites. 18-year-olds will have to stick to gambling on the ponies and the lottery.
Both toes in New Jersey
Players do not have to automatically be in New Jersey to enroll and finance their sportsbook account, but in order to play for real-money, they need to have both feet planted in the Garden State. Notice , that does not mean that they have to hold residence in New Jersey, rather they just need to be physically located inside its borders.
Therefore a bettor from a neighboring state like Pennsylvania or New York may view the New Jersey traces (on most sites), enroll and finance an account and then head over to that Starbucks right over the edge to place real-money wagers, in so long as they have an established Wi-Fi or 4G connection.
Registering an account
For those involved in daily fantasy or NJ online casino/poker, registration on most online sportsbooks is a cinch. That’s because many operators have woven their sports betting sites into their current platforms. Have a Play SugarHouse casino accounts? No need to enroll for the sportsbook. Same is true for DraftKings DFS account holders, and those enrolled with Betfair Casino, which employs the same registration info as FanDuel Sportsbook. Easy.
Registration SSN
Only the last four digits of your SSN needed!
For the rest, registration is a simple two-step process, first requiring that players enter some details in their individual, such as their social security number (but generally only the last four digits). Afterward their advice is vetted using a rigorous verification procedure, used to ensure that participant identities are protected from any unethical deeds. This process takes only a couple of seconds, after which gamers are free to make their initial deposit.
Funding an account
While several online sportsbooks at New Jersey offer no-deposit bonuses to new players, those who want to make more than a few wagers will probably need to make a deposit. Here’s the fantastic news: Depositing funds on a NJ online sportsbook is easy, largely because most operators have been successfully handling payment processing for years. The kinks, by and large, have already been exercised.
Bettors will discover that just about every sportsbook accepts many different payment methods such as ACH, credit/debit cards, prepaid card options, and PayPal, together with trades processing close instantly. Additionally, there are a plethora of ways to find money off the site, with rapid turnaround times. So no need to be anxious if that +1000 bet comes from and you want to lock up the win.
Word to the wise: When initial financing an NJ online sports betting account, be sure to use one of those hyperlinks on the page or on our review pages to make sure that you receive the maximum welcome bonus for new players.

Special features: In-play, money out, active promotional schedule To say that FanDuel online sportsbook has a great deal going for it would be a pretty gross understatement. Forgetting about its massive daily fantasy database for an instant, FanDuel recently merged with industry sharp Paddy Power Betfair (forming the FanDuel Group), meaning it has one of the most skillful sportsbook vets in its corner. Together, and with a little assistance from IGT, they’ve made a book that is largely loved from the NJ sports gambling community, not to mention the team at US Bets too.

Welcome bonus: Matched free bet up to $500
Tech partners: Kambi
Mobile apps: iOS and Android
Integration ties: DraftKings Daily Fantasy (stage, tight pocket )
Particular features: In-play, money out
Surprisingly, it had been daily dream operator DraftKings and not an Atlantic City brand which started the first online sports gambling site in New Jersey. This first-mover status, along with DK’s crazy big user database, connection with innovative tech provider Kambi, and competitive marketing has paid off big, as DraftKings is no question that the business’s early market share leader. Whether it is going to remain on top remains a significant question, as competition has gotten fierce, as well as the”juice” on DraftKings trends a bit higher comparative to other sites.

Welcome bonus: Up to $500 in free bets
Tech partners: The Stars Group (parent company)
Mobile apps: iOS and Android
Integration ties: PokerStars NJ (wallet, cellular platform)
Particular characteristics: In-play, money out, Spin & Bet
BetStars is no stranger to the online sports gambling space, having launched an global merchandise in 2015 that has increased quicker than Lebron James’ net value. It is also the sister manufacturer of a tiny online poker website that you may have heard of: PokerStars. Ironically, BetStars NJ — licensed under Resorts Digital — has not made much noise yet, due in part to its late launch on iOS and the lack of a PC platform. Nonetheless, it’s making up for lost time by hurling more promotions than you can shake a stick at. That, together with its slick user interface, cutesy game formats like Spin & Bet, and powerful branding lead us to think it’s going attract a reasonable number of punters.
BetStars NJ for Android
Fun fact: BetStars NJ enjoys to provide increased odds on 3-leg NFL parlays. Be on the lookout for these Super Boosts.
Perform SugarHouse Sports
Launch date: August 23, 2018

Tech partners: Kambi
Mobile programs: iOS and Android
Integration ties: Play SugarHouse Casino (wallet, stage )
Special features: In-play, cash out, complete cellular integration
When Play SugarHouse, managed by Rush Street Interactive, burst upon the NJ online casino scene in September 2016, it was pretty much an afterthought. But players immediately noticed that the website did almost every facet of iGaming better than anybody else. Suffice it to say, the site warms up, and we anticipate its fully incorporated sportsbook to execute quite well as well. Beyond its stellar reputation, Play SugarHouse provides a lot of bets (both pre-game and live), an aggressive and easy-to-clear welcome bonus, free bingo games, and a loyalty program that truly matters. And now that it’s aligned with Monmouth Park it can offer wagers on NBA games — it could not do while partnered with Golden Nugget AC.

Interesting fact: The number of available in-play stakes for any specific competition is typically in the dozens, or even hundreds.
888sport NJ
Launch date: September 10, 2018
Welcome bonus: $10 free + 100% up to $500 (6x playthrough)
Tech partners: Kambi
Mobile apps: iOS and Android
Integration ties: 888casino, 888poker (wallet, loose ties to platform)
Particular features: In-play, cash out
Much like BetStars NJ, 888sport has been launched in other jurisdictions long before it set sail for the U.S. to not mention, parent firm 888 Holdings, partnered with Caesars in Atlantic City, was an active participant in the NJ iGaming market since 2013, supporting both online casino (888casino) and poker (888poker) websites. All this bodes favorably for 888sport NJ’s potential, as does its venture with Kambi, tons of gambling markets, and slick interface. But the playthrough requirements on bonuses are tough, and some of the traces have something to be wanted, so we do wonder how large a market it will carve out.
888sport NJ desktop computer and mobile perspectives Fun fact: 888sport is one of the very few NJ online sports gambling sites where players can land a bonus without needing to commit a dime.

Special features: full mobile integration, earn Total Rewards credits online For a business which has tons of experience in the mobile sports betting sphere, Caesars convinced disappointed with the first launch of its online sportsbook in New Jersey. The lines are positive, no doubt, but there is simply not enough of these, including no in-play option. That said, the preparation of a good app has been laid, as the sportsbook has already been integrated into Caesars’ favorite internet casino app, with sports wagers awarding Total Rewards tier and benefits credits. The cashier can also be top-notch, featuring PayPal, ACH payments and a slew of other alternatives. There is just no sports specific welcome package and very little to bet on, and that needs to change.

Tech partners: IGT (technology ), GVC (joint venture)
Mobile programs: iOS and Android

Special features: In-play
What do you get when you join one of the largest casino brands on the planet (who happens to support a renowned mobile sports betting app in Nevada), a leading gambling operator in GVC, and tech given by IGT? Turns out, you get a pretty substandard app. Yes, playMGM Sportsbook is serviceable, offering a reasonable variety of betting markets, solid lines, along with a shared wallet with playMGM Casino. However, the lack of a distinctive welcome bonus, in-play, and any sense of invention holds it all back. We expect improvements in the not too distant future, which will include a desktop program, but for now, there just is not anything specific here.

In just a brief time period, William Hill has established itself as a dominant force at the New Jersey sports gambling market. It functions branded books at Monmouth Park, Ocean Resort Casino, and Tropicana Casino. Complementing its land-based novels is a sport wagering app available for iOS, Android, and desktop. The program is, well… average, supporting a solid number of betting markets, in-play, and offering a decent cashier. There is just nothing dazzling about it, at least not yet.
William Hill NJ on desktop and mobile
Interesting fact: William Hill is the sole operator in New Jersey aligned with more than one land-based partner.
Land-based sportsbooks at New Jersey
In the event the numerous online sports gambling websites available in New Jersey aren’t sufficient to whet your wagering desire, or if gaming over the web simply isn’t something, you will be very happy to know that New Jersey plays host to a range of land-based novels. And decent news for you Central and Northern New Jerseyans, these brick & mortar books are not confined solely to Atlantic City, as traditional casino gambling is.
Casino sportsbooks
Currently, seven out of Atlantic City’s nine present casinos comprise sportsbooks. Some are larger (and more durable ) than others, however, we suspect that as the business ages, so too will the AC sportsbooks mature.

The country’s horsemen will also be heavily involved with the sports betting industry, together with Monmouth Park and its enthusiastic operator Dennis Drazin cutting the ribbon on New Jersey’s initial playoff sportsbook, the Monmouth Park Sports Book from William Hill, on June 14, 2018.
This was followed just 1 month later by the debut of this FanDuel Sportsbook at the Meadowlands. Since, the Meadowlands has become the best earning land-based book in New Jersey, which doesn’t actually shock given its strong branding, closeness to New Jersey’s and New York’s main population centres, and of course, its perspective of MetLife Stadium — home of the New York Giants and Jets.
The nation’s third horseracing track, Freehold Raceway, has yet to dip its toe in the sport gambling waters, but its chances are looking great.
More NJ sportsbooks coming shortly If you believe New Jersey has a lot of sportsbook now, simply wait.
On the front, we don’t expect too much growth. With the launch of the William Hill Sports Book at Tropicana Casino, there is only two candidates left in Atlantic City to launch books. One, Hard Rock Casino, we hope to go live with a retail book this quarter, as Hard Rock has already signed a Letter of Intent with Gambling Innovation Group to an omni-channel sportsbook platform.
As mentioned, Freehold Raceway, possessed by Penn National Gaming and Greenwood Gaming (owner of Parx Casino in Pennsylvania) is also a prime candidate to enter the land-based sports gambling realm.
On the internet front, there is a lot more room to maneuver as each sports betting license holder is eligible for three branded sites, or skins. Some, like Monmouth Park and Resorts AC, have already debuted two skins, but a lot of others, such as heavyweights Tropicana, Hard Rock Casino, and Golden Nugget, haven’t launched any. Expect multiple AC-branded online sportsbooks to pop up at the not-so-distant future, and also for other companies such as the Kindred Group (now adapting with Hard Rock Casino) and Australian-based PointsBet (partnered with the Meadowlands) to also launch online books in New Jersey.
After the smoke clears it won’t be unheard of to find upwards of 30 online sportsbooks at New Jersey.
Regulations, taxes, and earnings It was only a few brief weeks following the U.S. Supreme Court kicked PASPA to the wayside which New Jersey passed sports betting legislation. The bill passed by unanimous vote in both chambers and was swiftly signed into law by Governor Phil Murphy (who also happened to place the first bet at Monmouth Park after that week) on June 11.
Regulation of the business was passed off to the NJ Division of Gaming Enforcement, the exact same agency that manages oversight for Atlantic City casinos and online gaming websites in New Jersey. Fortunately, the state was primed to supply sports gambling for several years, enabling regulators to launch emergency regulations only two weeks after Murphy penned the sport gambling bill into law.
New Jersey law mandates that only qualified casinos and racetracks be eligible for a sports gambling license, which online sportsbook operators must be partnered with a license holder. Other points of interest:
The fee for a sports wagering permit was put in a minimum of $100,000
The tax rate is set at 8.5% for land-based venues, and 13% for internet websites, with horsemen needed to pay an extra 1.25percent to the Division of Local Government Services in the Dept. of Community Affairs.
Permit holders are restricted to three independently branded sites, or skins.
Wagering on college sports is allowed, unless a New Jersey college or university group is involved. Then it’s a no-go.
Permit holders have a 270-day window (transactional waiver) to run online sportsbooks at the lack of a physical sportsbook.
New Jersey does not pay an ethics fee to professional sports leagues in market for league and data oversight, nor will it probably ever.
In terms of handle, New Jersey books took $184 million in bets during September 2018. And out of June — September, the industry generated over $40.4 million in earnings. Word is still out on exactly how large the business will get, since there are still a great deal of books which haven’t launched yet, and many prospective bettors are still unaware of the distinction between legal and offshore sites, or that legal sports betting is even a thing. Industry analysts see NJ sports gambling topping out at just over $300 million in annual revenue, which might render it an ever-so-slightly bigger moneymaker than in Nevada. We tend to agree with this investigation.
A brief history of New Jersey sports gambling New Jersey’s battle to legalize sports gambling within its borders extends all of the way back to 2009, when State Sen. Raymond Lesniak introduced sports gambling legislation. His bill would readily pass through voter referendum in 2011, leading then Governor Chris Christie to pass it into law the following year.
Unfortunately there was one enormous roadblock, which was the skilled and Amateur Sports Protection Amendment (PASPA) of 1992. PASPA, driven by former New York Knick Bill Bradley, illegal sports wagering in all but four countries (and really only Nevada). Interestingly, New Jersey had a 1 year window from the inception of PASPA to pass laws legalizing sports betting from the state, but political turmoil doomed the campaign. Because of this, New Jersey was effectively closed out of sports betting for another 25 years.
Soon after sports betting regulations were published in August 2012, professional sports leagues filed a suit against Christie and New Jersey. The next few years were riddled with disappointment because of New Jersey, since it first lost in the district courts, then twice at the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. Subsequently in June 2014, the nation was delivered another catastrophic blow, when the U.S. Supreme Court refused to take New Jersey’s appeal.
Additionally in 2014, the always staunch gaming proponent Lesniak went to work on new sports gambling legislation that would function as a type of PASPA workaround. The same result, with New Jersey and Christie once again losing to the leagues at the courts. But by this time, the prevailing attitude toward sports gambling was starting to show some cracks. Guided by this, New Jersey once more asked the U.S. Supreme Court to hear its case. This time, it accepted, hearing oral arguments in Christie v. NCAA (later Murphy v. NCAA) on December 4, 2017.
Five-and-a-half month later, on May 14, 2018, the Court announced its decision, voting 7-2 that PASPA violated the 10th amendment, and deeming it completely unconstitutional by a 6-3 count. Only a few weeks later, New Jersey passed a brand new sports gambling bill, and in a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Monmouth Park sportsbook on June 14, 2018, the industry was born.Today, it thrives.
